LSU Health’s Mitchell Receives INSPIRE Award

Miranda Mitchell, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at LSU Health New Orleans’ Baton Rouge Regional Campus, is the only Louisiana recipient of the American Medical Women’s Association’s (AMWA) 2023 INSPIRE Award. Dr. Mitchell was honored for exemplary leadership, mentorship and a deep commitment to changing the culture of medicine.

According to AMWA, the INSPIRE Awards, announced by the AMWA Leadership Council, champion women physicians who personally and/or professionally provide inspiration to women in medicine through expert and compassionate patient-centered medical care, mentorship, or service to the community.

Dr. Mitchell instructs resident physicians and medical students in inpatient and ambulatory settings at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital (OLOL). In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she is the Lead Physician for the OLOL Sickle Cell Clinic and is the Director of the Office of Diversity and Community Engagement at the LSU Health New Orleans Baton Rouge Regional Campus. From 2016 to 2022, she served as Medical Director for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at OLOL, with the last two years of this term Chairing the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. Dr. Mitchell serves on many local, regional and state committees, including the School of Medicine’s Admission Committee. Dr. Mitchell is passionate about mentoring future/current physicians, primary prevention in the ambulatory care setting and fostering community pipeline programs. She is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Mitchell received her B.S. in Chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana and her M.D. from LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine. She completed her residency with the LSU Health New Orleans Internal Medicine Residency Program in Baton Rouge at the former Earl K. Long Hospital. Following residency, she worked as a private hospitalist with Our Lady of the Lake Hospital Medicine Service. After a brief career in private practice, Dr. Mitchell joined the academic faculty of the LSU Health Internal Medicine program in Baton Rouge.
